Psychophysiological approach to the diagnostics of cognitive processes in schizophrenia

Abstract

The article discusses the possibilities of the psychophysiological approach to the assessment of cognitive functions. Diagnostics was carried out using the psychophysiological method of visocontrastometry and psychological methods. The relationship of perception, thinking process as well as the characteristics of memory and attention is discussed. The functional state of the magnocellular and parvocellular visual systems, characteristics of their interaction with cognitive functions was analyzed. The data obtained made it possible to establish that the activity of the magnocellular system is associated with working memory features and the properties of attention. Hyperactivation of the magnocellular system is accompanied by a violation of the selective attention. The contribution of magnocellular and parvocellular systems (mechanisms of global and local analysis) to the implementation of thinking processes has been discovered. Comparative analysis showed an increase in the activity of the magnocellular neural system (the mechanism of global analysis) and a decrease in the activity of the parvocellular system (the mechanism of local analysis) in the first episode of schizophrenia, and a decrease in the sensitivity (activity) of both neuronal systems in the chronic form of schizophrenia.
